A record Air Canada Centre crowd of 19,620 saw the best and worst of what fighting has to offer in the Leafs' 6-5 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins: one fight got the Maple Leafs into the game; the other might have cost them Kris Newbury.
Defenceman Hal Gill was praised for fighting Colby Armstrong in the second period, getting the crowd on its feet and marking a turning point in a game in which the points-hungry Leafs were able to salvage one.
"It helped us. We needed to get a little emotion going in the game," said captain Mats Sundin.
