Leafs turn up the heat

At this point of the season, with the trading deadline three weeks away, a coach might send out subtle hints through the media about what his team needs for the stretch run; the airing of a laundry list in public meant to put a little pressure on the general manager.

But, these days, Leafs bench boss Paul Maurice instead openly discusses how he'd prefer not to make a move, especially if it cuts into the development time of John Pohl, Ian White or Carlo Colaiacovo, or alters the chemistry of the team.

"If there's clearly something that makes you better, away you go," said Maurice. "But we've all seen it a lot of times where (a trade) changes your room to the point that you wonder."
